Your employment may end several weeks before your flight. Plan health coverage for that interval using your actual employment end and departure dates. A remaining appointment, prescription or unexpected illness can fall into the gap, so settling the insurance arrangement belongs on the same departure list as your final salary and housing handover.
Establish when employment coverage ends
For an employee leaving a company, Kyokai Kenpo states that the former employment coverage cannot be used from the day after resignation. Keeping an old eligibility document does not extend it. See its notice for departing employees.
For example, with an August 31 employment end date and a September 20 flight, the period starting September 1 needs attention. Ask HR to confirm the formal employment end date rather than using your last day physically in the office; annual leave can make those dates different. Also ask when proof of loss of coverage will be available.
Compare the applicable routes
Kyokai Kenpo describes three main arrangements after retirement: voluntary continuation, municipal National Health Insurance and coverage as an eligible family dependent. Its overview explains that premiums and eligibility differ. The cheapest-looking monthly figure is not useful until the insurer confirms that you qualify for the arrangement during your particular interval.
Request a calculation for the dates that actually apply. Give the municipality or insurer the same facts: employment end date, planned move abroad, household members and any planned new employment. Ask which months are billed and what procedure ends coverage. Do not assume that every option offers daily prorating or ends automatically on the flight date.
Check the continuation deadline early
Kyokai Kenpo’s continuation eligibility FAQ requires at least two continuous months of qualifying prior coverage and an application within 20 days from loss of eligibility, with the stated adjustment when the twentieth day is a weekend or holiday. A mailed application must arrive within the deadline.
If your former employer uses a different health insurance society, obtain its instructions. Do not wait until your flight week to discover that an application window has already passed. Put the confirmed deadline and submission method in your calendar, along with the date supporting documents are expected.
Prepare for an appointment during the transition
If you already have treatment booked, contact the new insurer and the clinic about the documents needed on that date. Explain that coverage is changing. Do not present former employer coverage simply because a new eligibility record or document has not yet reached you.
Keep the following in one folder:
- HR’s confirmation of the coverage-loss date.
- The new insurer’s application instructions and your submission record.
- Confirmation of the effective coverage period and payment instructions.
- Receipts and correspondence for treatment during the transition.
If the coverage record is unclear, ask the insurer how the clinic should handle billing and what evidence to preserve. Avoid assuming that a reimbursement will happen automatically.
Include the exit procedure in the choice
Choosing coverage for the weeks before departure is only half the job. Before enrolling, ask how the planned overseas move affects the arrangement and how any remaining premium will be settled. Record the answer separately from pension and resident-tax tasks.
Use the departure checklist to track those tasks together. If you also plan a pension withdrawal, consult the pension withdrawal guide; arranging medical coverage does not itself submit that claim or determine its eligibility.
