Before comparing exchange rates, confirm who will send the money and which account can receive it. Your pension lump-sum payment, a later tax refund and your own savings are separate payments. They may need different transfer arrangements.
Start with the payment route
- Pension lump-sum payment: follow the Japan Pension Service claim instructions for the receiving account. Do not assume that payment details supplied by a money-transfer service are acceptable pension payout details.
- Tax refund: agree with your tax representative how any refund will be received and forwarded to you, including fees and supporting records.
- Your own savings: compare transfer services only after checking that your bank and the service permit the transaction with your current residence and account status.
Use the Japan Pension Service’s current claim instructions for pension payment arrangements. A transfer provider’s account details do not establish eligibility for a pension claim.
Can your tax representative pay into your Wise account?
Do not give your representative your Wise JPY pay-in details to fund your account. Wise says these details are personal to you and that deposits must come from a bank account in your own name. Third-party payments are rejected. See Wise’s JPY pay-in account rules.
This rule concerns funding through the JPY pay-in account. It should not be read as a rule covering every Wise receiving feature in every currency. Ask about the exact product and transaction. Nor should a representative assume that using their own personal Wise account to forward client money is permitted; they must confirm that arrangement with their provider.
For sending JPY, Wise requires funding from a bank within Japan and matching sender names. Its JPY transfer guide explains supported funding methods, verification and limits. An account opened before departure does not by itself ensure that you can fund a transfer after moving abroad.
Compare the amount you actually receive
Request quotes for the same total yen budget, destination currency, receiving account and time. Compare eligible routes, then record the following. A headline transfer fee alone is not enough to make a useful comparison.
| What to record | Bank quote | Wise quote, if eligible |
|---|---|---|
| Quote date, time and expiry | Enter quote details | Enter quote details |
| Total JPY leaving your account, including separately charged fees | Enter total | Enter total |
| Exchange rate and destination currency | Enter rate and currency | Enter rate and currency |
| Quoted recipient amount | Enter amount | Enter amount |
| Any intermediary or receiving-bank deductions not included | Confirm or mark unknown | Confirm or mark unknown |
| Estimated arrival and verification requirements | Confirm for this route | Confirm for this route |
For equal total yen outlay, compare the recipient amounts after known deductions. If a deduction is unknown, label the comparison as an estimate. Keep a tax representative’s service fee separate from the transfer fee, but include both when budgeting your final proceeds.
There is no universal saving figure for every bank, currency and amount. Check a current quote rather than relying on a fixed percentage, a guaranteed arrival time or an old example exchange rate.
Agree on the route before money moves
- Write down the sender, receiving account holder, currencies and countries for each payment.
- Ask your bank about account use after departure and how to update your address and residence status.
- Have your representative confirm an allowed forwarding route, their service fee, transfer charges and the records you will receive.
- Obtain current quotes and retain the pension payment notice, tax refund information and transfer receipts.
